Manufacturing Tolerances:
Actual nominal sizes are 0.2 inches smaller than listed. Thickness dimensions are ± 1/8 in (± 3 mm). Width and length dimensions are ± 0.13 in (±3 mm). All weights are ± 5%.
Hesco Testing Protocol
NIJ Certification for hard armor needs 10” x 12” test plates. These plates must defeat specific rounds according to a valid NIJ shot pattern after a strict conditioning process to simulate aging and wear. Level IIIA requires six .357 sig (9 mm FMJ for NIJ 0108.01) and six .44 mag per plate.
NIJ allows other size torso plates of the same construction to be included in the Certification without more testing.
Hesco sets a higher standard. They publish the minimum number of shots each size plate can defeat under similar NIJ testing and list additional threats not covered by NIJ Certification. Check the Threat Performance Matrix for details.
